6 Tips for a Successful Interview with a Law Firm

We all know that the first impression is the most striking and meaningful. In fact, statistics show that many interviewers already make a lasting opinion about a candidate within the first few minutes of an interview. A great interview can really make a difference when it comes to landing a dream job at a law firm. So, how do you go about making the best impression in each interview?
While many people don’t like to be interviewed, it’s essential to be authentic. Also understand that employers are looking for someone who is interested in the firm, the areas of practice, and the position itself.
Here are some tips that will help you significantly increase your chances of landing the ideal job.
1. Do your research
Regardless of the size of the firm, there is bound to be something on the Internet about the firm or the lawyers who work there. Search for the names of the associates. Look at the types of cases this firm has handled in the past. Find out if any of the lawyers have published any articles of interest. In some cases, you will be able to find information about the philanthropic causes supported by the firm or other community commitments. All these elements are excellent topics for discussion during your interview and demonstrate your commitment to your search and interest in the firm.
2. Be polite to everyone in the office
You have no idea who is influencing decisions within a law firm. Often, recruiters will ask the receptionist how you behaved, what you said, and whether you were early or late to the interview. It’s always a good idea (in interviews and in life) to treat everyone with kindness and respect, regardless of their role or position in the company.
3. Be prepared to answer tough questions
If interviews were easy, everyone would land a job on the first try. Understand that recruiters are not looking for perfection; they are looking for someone who is authentic and who fits well with the company. The recruiter may ask you a question about your weaknesses, your dream career, or what you liked least about your previous job. It’s good to be perfectly honest (but tactful) and most importantly to stay positive when you respond. Depict negative experiences as a positive, i.e., how you learned from the situation or the actions you took to turn a bad situation into a positive one.
4. Ask questions
Nothing is more off-putting for a recruiter than someone who doesn’t ask questions. Asking questions shows a natural interest and curiosity, which are two traits that many employers look for in an employee. Even if you must dig to find something to ask, be prepared to ask questions about the company and/or position.
With these simple steps in mind, even the most nervous candidates can successfully complete their interview with a law firm.
5. Send a thank you message
It is strongly recommended to send a thank you email to the recruiter on the day of the interview. It demonstrates your interest in continuing in the hiring process, as well as a level of professionalism. If you want to reinforce your gratitude, you can also send a handwritten thank you card.
6. Stay in touch with the recruiter
Understand that many recruiters are talking with other candidates. It is not outside the realm of possibilities that resumes sometimes get lost in the shuffle. It is good practice to do a follow-up call or send an email within 3-5 business days to ask how the interview process is going and reaffirm your interest in the position.
